Fertilising Apple Trees
Why fertilise?
Different plants have different needs, but they all need nutrition.
For an apple tree the right kind of fertilisation is especially important in its juvenile years. When an apple tree has received the balance of nutrients the need for pruning is reduced, the tree sets fruit at a younger age and winter damages can be reduced.
Initial Fertilising
Before the tree is planted Kekkilä’s Garden Lime should be added to the soil or you should use Kekkilä Garden Soil for the tree. If no new soil is added – add Kekkilä’s Berry Fertiliser or Autumn Fertiliser from August and onwards.
In the Spring
Kekkilä Berry Fertiliser
In the Summer
If there are plenty of small apples, continue with Kekkilä Berry Fertiliser.
In the Autumn
Autumn Fertiliser is given from August and onwards, but no later than September.
Where to Fertilise
An apple tree spreads its roots as widely as its branches. Therefore fertiliser should be added to the soil as widely as the crown spans.
