The Benefit of Mulches

Mulches serve many roles in the garden. One of the most helpful benefits is that mulches suppress the growth of weeds. Mulches also give the garden a neat and finished look. In addition to this they maintain moisture for the plant by diminishing evaporation from the ground.

When to Spread
One of the best times to spread mulches is in the spring, just after the ground has thawed. The ground is still quite moist after the winter and no weeds have yet germinated in the still cold weather.

Providing the soil is free from perennial weeds and their roots, a layer of mulch can be spread directly on the ground. Otherwise it is best to use a fabric cover such as geotextile between the ground and the mulch layer.

Mulch can also be spread when new plantings are done. Remember to water the soil under the mulch thoroughly, before adding the mulch. Mulch can also be spread after a through weeding, and it can be spread with a layer of fabric after a less than thorough weeding.

Different Mulches:

Bark Mulch and Ornamental Mulches
Trees and shrubs need a layer of 5-10cm.

Ornamental Stones
Spread on a fabric like geotextile. A layer of around 3 centimeters is enough if the ground is level.
